Arquitecto y pintor alemán. Como arquitecto estatal de Prusia (desde 1815), ejecutó muchos encargos para Federico Guillermo III y otros miembros de la familia real. Basó sus diseños en la evocación de muchos estilos históricos. Su mausoleo para la Reina Luisa (1810) y la iglesia Wedersche de ladrillo y terracota en Berlín (1821–30), están dentro de los primeros diseños del neogótico en Europa. Otras de sus obras son la Schauspielhaus (1818, en estilo neoclásico) y el museo Altes (1822–30), ambos en Berlín. En 1830 asumió como director de la oficina prusiana de obras públicas; su trabajo como planificador urbano produjo nuevos bulevares y plazas en Berlín. Sus creaciones en arquitectura romántica-clásica, pintura de paisajes y otras artes relacionadas, como escenarios de teatro en herrería, lo convirtieron durante su vida en el principal árbitro nacional en cuestiones de estética.
